How does a manufacturer's warranty actually work?
What do I get for my money and why buy from a reputable in-store brand.

Many consumers misunderstand the purpose of a warranty and what it offers, what it includes and how it can benefit you to buy a bike in-store from your local bike shop, with a proper warranty. In reality, the likelihood of a manufacturer's product being defective is very low. It happens but it's rare. The thing is, a warranty is most likely to be your best friend, not for defects, but for when you crash all of your own making and need support.
Big brands such as Specialized, offer enhanced warranty programs to encourage people to invest their money in their products and not on products supplier purely by online direct-to-consumer brands. In-store brands like Spesh, have a vested interest in looking after you even after warranty.
Specialized, for example offer a program called 'Assisted Rider Purchase'. This is whereby they will endeavour to find you a replacement frame if you've crashed and broken yours, at a significantly reduced price. In some cases as much as 35% discount. These offers help in situations whereby there is no insurance cover. If you are covered by insurance and they agree to cover your claim, that's great and 'ARP' is not needed. But often, riders do not have insurance cover and sometimes the insurer will refuse to cover for various reasons. This is where 'ARP' comes in handy.
The key thing to bear in mind with any purchase you make, is that a warranty is only valid if you have registered your bike using your proof of purchase, within 30 days (number of days varies from brand to brand).
More importantly, there can sometimes be an extended warranty offered or a 'lifetime' warranty on the frame for example and this is only ever valid if you have registered your bike at time of purchase.
Remember, the warranties that come with your bike are a mixture of various brands i.e the frame will carry a warranty from the manufacturer, the wheels from another and the components from yet another. When your derailleur or wheel brake, the company who made that frame are not involved - we liaise with the manufacturer of that component specifically.
This is one of the most compelling reasons why you should buy from a local bike shop. With online stores, you are on your own when you have a warranty which means doing the communication with each brand by yourself, packaging up parts and walking to the post office in your lunch break! As a local bike shop, we take care of all that for you and we buy many bikes/parts from those brands. That means they need to support us, where as dealing direct, you are just one person with a small historic buying footprint with the brands. We fight your corner and we have your back.
