Drugs
It must be something about the sea and the surf that brings out the great unwashed. You know the kind I am on about, the matted hair, 60′s style clothing and bangles and bits of string around wrists & ankles. Whilst we were sat having lunch yesterday a small group of these colourful people arrived at the table next to us and having shared a pizza between seven of them proceeded to unpack a selection of pouches of greenish ‘tobacco’. The ‘roll ups’ were certainly fatter than the normal skinny efforts some of my friends in Jersey have produced from Old Holborn and the smoke a very different smell that Susan assured me wasn’t normal tobacco and one that I hadn’t smelled since the fourth year at school. As we wandered about the town and port of Essaouira during the afternoon we were offered everything from hash through dope to opium and god knows what. Some might say we were walking in the wrong part of town but this was in the middle of the tourist area. Maybe it was the Cali-surf Tee shirt and flip-flops that meant I looked little different to the rest of the tourists. I wear the ‘Livestrong’ yellow cancer band and also the blue anti-drugs of ‘Bikepure’ (www.Bikepure.org) but could these be mistaken for the string and weave of the ‘hippy’ few? However it did get me thinking about casual clothing and the perception of our habits that others have by what we wear. Perhaps we should look into a range of casual clothing for cyclists that is as casual as the Hollister Tee and shorts but just that little bit smarter – Ripcurl meets Hugo Boss.
I have finished the Lance Armstrong book that was written about his 6th win of the Tour. It seemed to be as much about Lance as those people around him at the time and many who have since been found out as cheats. Tyler Hamilton, Floyd Landis, Ivan Basso, Jan Ullrich, Vino etc. The moral of the story was that you will be found out in the end and so you are only cheating yourself.
